Two valleys; East of Stuttgart

The Neckar valley and the plain beyond

As the Neckar wends its way east it is enclosed by steep hills to the north and much forested land to the south. The Neckar turns sharply southwest just beyond Plochingen, as it searches its source that is within a few kilometers of Schwenningen, the city twinned with Villingen. Good farming country lies east of this turn, and here Storrers settled in many towns and villages.

The llimited records we have in this region do not clarify whether these Stohrers are from Heiningen or nearby Göppingen. It is possible the family lived in Heiningen but went to church in Göppingen. Holzheim is nearer Gammelshausen than either of these other two towns.

Documents on Storer/Stohrer in Börtlingen date back earlier than any other town in terms of extensive information. Yet Bortlingen, hardly 5 km from Göppingen, today does not seem to have a town council, for we have been unable to locate even a postal code for the town!

Linking families whose children move from their parents' town to another is one of the major problems of genealogical research. The first document below is the result of combining the comprehensive research on the Göppingen area by Kathy Bonnell with this genealogist's research on the Storer/Stohrer familly in that area. It has allowed us to connect several families over several towns. Where the connections that appear here might have been made totally conjecturally, here they can be made with a greater level of certainty, though not with absolute proof.

What is provided below is the family of Markus Storrer, born about 1558, probably in Börtlingen, but the documents indicate only Donaukreis. Where families can be linked from our original documentatin, either within Bortlingen or to Holzheim, this has been done for his descendants. Our ultimate goal, of course, is to link every name in these genealogical documents back to Speyer.
